Of the New Year - Original Poem

I find the week between Christmas and New Years really difficult to deal with emotionally; we have a whole week gap sandwiched between two of the biggest days of the year, and for what? I do enjoy catching up with family and watching as many films as I can, though I usually end up burying myself in work. I know that it’s technically still Christmas, but to me, the heart of the holiday has gone until next year. It’s an acknowledgement far too painful to bare come Boxing Day, so I try to keep myself as busy as possible.

Whilst I find January an unbearably gloomy month, I do love the untouched magic behind the first day of the year. The mistakes you made the day before no longer matter - it’s a new year now. A new year means a fresh page, a blank canvas and it’s completely yours to write, paint or tarnish however you wish. You can do whatever you want, be whoever you want to be before reality kicks in and your old habits loom their unwanted heads.

I've spent today reminiscing on the past year and writing my goals for the next twelve months. There's so many things I want to achieve. For the first time in a long time, I'm really, really excited to see where things might be headed.

I stare at it

the blank canvas

as white as the snow we wished for at Christmas

Unmarred, pristine

A new page, a starting scene

I rearrange the paintbrushes

dip one into a can of red

Then I debate

Should I use a pen instead

I spend all day wondering

how to tarnish this untouched chapter

until I decide

that last years mistakes no longer matter

I paint the canvas navy

sketch on a few stars

and make my resolutions and wishes

I’m going to heal these scars

Page 1 of 366! I hope you all had a wonderful festive break. To those of you who spent New Year's alone, how you spent it doesn't define or foreshadow how magical the year is going to be for you.

Leave behind your regrets, your mistakes and whatever it was that had you crying late at night for weeks at a time. It's a new chapter!

Remember to follow me on Instagram if you haven't already.

See you soon,
